General information
What is the Registry of Renewable Gases?
The Registry of Renewable Gases is an electronic system designed for the issuance, transfer, and cancellation (use) of Guarantees of Origin (GOs) for renewable gases.
Each Guarantee of Origin represents one megawatt-hour (1 MWh) of renewable gas, primarily biomethane injected into the gas distribution network.
Guarantees of Origin are created based on metering data at the injection point into the distribution network. The Registry allows biomethane plant operators, renewable gas producers, gas suppliers, gas consumers, and other account holders to open and manage their accounts.
What is a Guarantee of Origin of renewable gas?
A Guarantee of Origin of renewable gas is an electronic certificate proving that a given quantity of gas was produced from renewable energy sources.
The Registry Operator issues a Guarantee of Origin electronically, upon request of the renewable gas producer, for each megawatt-hour of renewable gas produced.
A Guarantee of Origin of renewable gas may be used within 12 months from the date of production of the renewable gas.
What is the purpose of a Guarantee of Origin?
What is a Biomethane Quantity Certificate?
A Biomethane Quantity Certificate (Certificate of Amount – CoA) is issued electronically by the Registry Operator for a biomethane producer for each megawatt-hour of biomethane injected into the distribution network. The issuance of a Biomethane Quantity Certificate is conditional upon the prior issuance and cancellation of a Guarantee of Origin for the corresponding quantity of biomethane for which the producer requests the certificate.
What is the purpose of a Biomethane Quantity Certificate?
If a biomethane producer supplies biomethane to a combined heat and power electricity producer under a gas supply contract, the Biomethane Quantity Certificate is transferred to the CHP electricity producer.
For the purpose of receiving a surcharge (support payment) for electricity generated from biomethane in high-efficiency combined heat and power generation, the consumption of biomethane is demonstrated by:
-
the transfer of the Biomethane Quantity Certificate to the CHP electricity producer, and
-
the physical consumption of biomethane corresponding to the transferred certificate within the CHP technology.
The Biomethane Quantity Certificate is cancelled once the CHP electricity producer has generated electricity from biomethane.
Information on the functioning of the Registry of Renewable Gases
Is the issuance of Guarantees of Origin of renewable gases subject to fees and a contract with SPP – distribúcia, a.s.?
Yes.
A market participant wishing to become an Account Holder and to request the issuance of Guarantees of Origin (GOs) of renewable gas within the G-REX system is required to conclude a contract with SPP – distribúcia, a.s. covering activities related to the issuance, transfer, and use of Guarantees of Origin of renewable gases.
Based on this contract, the Account Holder is charged the following fees for services related to the operation of the Registry of Renewable Gases:
-
an annual account maintenance fee,
-
issuance of a Guarantee of Origin for renewable gas in the Registry of Renewable Gases,
-
export of a Guarantee of Origin for renewable gas outside the Registry of Renewable Gases,
-
transfer of a Guarantee of Origin for renewable gas within the Registry of Renewable Gases,
-
import of a Guarantee of Origin for renewable gas into the Registry of Renewable Gases, and
-
transfer of a Biomethane Quantity Certificate (Certificate of Amount – CoA) within the Registry of Renewable Gases.
The current schedule of fees is published in the Price list and invoicing section.
Technical questions
What steps are required for applicants interested in the services of the Registry of Renewable Gases?
- Please notify us of your interest in opening an account by e-mail at least 30 days prior to the planned account setup in the Registry of Renewable Gases within the G-REX system.
- Complete the relevant Application Form available in the Applications and contractual documents section and submit it to us by e-mail. We will be happy to assist you with completing the Form.
- We will prepare for you a draft Contract covering activities related to the issuance and use of Guarantees of Origin of renewable gases. You are required to send four signed original copies of the Contract by post to the registered office address of SPP – distribúcia, a.s.
- After the Contract is signed by SPP – distribúcia, a.s., we will issue an invoice for the aliqot annual account maintenance fee, in accordance with the applicable pricing for services related to the operation of the Registry.
- Within three working days of the invoice payment being credited to the account of SPP – distribúcia, a.s., we will set up your access to the G-REX system.
- We will provide you with training on how to use your account in the G-REX system.
- If you have any questions, you may contact us at any time during business days.
Is a manual or rules available for the G-REX system?
A user manual is available for Account Holders after logging into the G-REX system. The Operating Rules of the Registry of Renewable Gases Operator are published in the Documentation section.
How do users log in to the G-REX system?
After an organisation has been created and a user has been assigned to it, the Account Holder will receive login instructions by e-mail at the registered e-mail address.
Login to the G-REX system is two-factor authentication-based and requires:
-
entry of a password, and
-
entry of a generated code from the Microsoft Authenticator mobile application.
The Microsoft Authenticator application can be downloaded to a mobile phone from Google Play or the Apple App Store.
